Outdoor Furniture | 3 Nifty Steps To Revive Your Teak Outdoor Furniture for Summer Entertaining

Blog

The hardness of teak makes it a good choice for outdoor patios because it can withstand natural elements like extreme winds and rain. Teak outdoor furniture can last you a lifetime, especially if you spend a little time taking care of it. Over a period, teak outdoor furniture can lose its shine and turn grey. Don't let this worry you! Some simple revival steps will have your teak outdoor furniture looking good as new –– just in time for your summer barbeque get-together. Make sure you have a pair of rubber gloves, brushes, medium sandpaper, a cleaning detergent, teak oil and polyurethane, all of which is available at a home improvement store.

Clean and Sand your Teak Outdoor Furniture

If your teak furniture is old and grey, cleaning instantly gives your outdoor pieces a facial uplift. Use a soft brush and apply detergent and warm water across the wood. This process eliminates the dirt and oxidation build-up that gives wood its greyish persona. Keep in mind that this may take quite a while, since you'll need to rub it into the wood –– you may want to prep your arm muscles at the gym just before you get started. Weathered teak will start transforming, as the original wood colour starts making an appearance. With medium sandpaper, gently sand the teak to even out the top wood layer. This will enable you to revive the original wood colour. Let the wood completely dry before moving onto the oiling. This will help the oil saturate fully into the pores of wood.

Oil Teak Outdoor Furniture

Be sure to oil the furniture in a properly ventilated area because you don't want to breathe in the chemicals. Make sure you get good quality teak oil from your home improvement store and apply it to the wood with a brush. You will need to coat the oil a few times on the wood. Allow drying time of a few hours between each coat, so that the oil can deeply seep into the wood. Apply the coat as many times as necessary –– until you acquire the wood colour you desire.

Seal Teak Outdoor Furniture

The oiling process will have your teak outdoor furniture looking refreshed, but there's still one more step to restore its new look –– sealing. Polyurethane sealer will help protect the oiled wood surface. Apply a few coats to the furniture and give it a few days for drying. You're now ready to host your summer barbeque.

These steps work on all types of teak outdoor furniture –– whether you have A grade teak, B grade teak or C grade teak furniture.
